Aurora Alexander's Tree Project

150+ year old tree

My thesis project focuses on using a 4’ tree trunk slice to develop an educational display for the Environmental Discovery Center at Spring Lake. Over the last few months, I have been sanding a Douglas Fir tree slice that originated from Los Guillicos Preserve, which, I have estimated is approximately 150 years old. My long term goal is to count the rings to determine an accurate age, and then develop it into a display piece. The finished exhibit will have several educational goals: 1) highlight tree anatomy and Douglas Firs ecology and the trees relationship to fungi, birds, and other species; 2) highlight an historical/cultural event timeline of Sonoma County and California more broadly, with a key focus on indigenous peoples.
