Pepperwood Hike

Students in Professor Matt Clark's GEP 340 Applied Ecology course masked up and loaded into vans en route to Pepperwood Preserve, located on the outskirts of Santa Rosa towards Calistoga. The preserve is a Sonoma County conservation and science masterpiece and a perfect place to see ecology in action, serving as a refuge for over 900 species of plants and animals. In addition, two recent wildfires have swept through Pepperwood, the 2017 Tubbs and 2019 Kincade fires, with varying levels of severity. Pepperwood has active post-fire restoration, forest thinning and prescribed burns on the property, making it an excellent location to show students how our local ecosystems recover from fire and techniques for active fuels management.
