Examining the link between land use patterns and residential water consumption
CSC Research (Center for Sustainable Communities)
Students in a water planning course and student assistants working in CSC explored the relationship between urban land use characteristics (e.g. share of detached houses, lot size, Sprawl Index) and residential water consumption in California cities. Analyses found that cities with more sprawling land use patterns, a function of city planning policies, had higher levels of water consumption. GEP alums Lily Cella and Teo Minkoff presented preliminary results of this study at the 2023 Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting in Denver.
